Students to perform olelo Hawaii opera
The public is invited to hear and see the moolelo of “Keaomelemele” come to life at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Hoike 2013, “E Hoi I Ke Kumuwaena — Return to the Source.” Students will share this legend through oli, mele and hula at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Koaia gymnasium on the Keaau campus.
Written in 1884 by Moses Manu, “Keaomelemele” features explanations about the gods, the priestly arts and the status of hula in those ancient days of the land. The story offers insights into the supernatural beings, eepa, and describes the origins of the reptilian moo, both as deities and as beings who hold sway over the watery places and wet niches of the Hawaiian archipelago.
“I’m not sure if an opera in olelo Hawaii has ever been done, but thanks to our musical director, Herb Mahelona, our haumana are going to break that ground,” said performing arts kumu Eric Stack.
Doors open at 6 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for a $5 donation, which goes to the the school’s Na Hoopaepae student aid fund. Call Lisa Pana at 982-0733 to reserve tickets.
